The Root Center was a non-profit org started by two friends of mine with intention to save the world. We didn't accomplish all that, but we did grow a lot of organic produce for donation to local food shelves.

The vision was to develop kits and manuals to distribute to municipalities under existential threat which would provide all the necessary information and as much material support needed in order for the town or city to survive and thrive through their difficulties (I have since been disabused of the notion that a single building could provide the needs of a modern city!). This would have taken the form of reusable concrete casts to form the struts and hubs of geodesic domes; the design essentials to create aquaponic food systems, Living Machine water purification, composting systems for soil regeneration, plant and tree nurseries for ecological restoration, and acoustic design for abetting the democratic process.

My role in the Root Center was broad. I spent saturdays coordinating volunteer efforts in planting crops, garden maintenance and harvesting. I helped to design the garden layout after we moved to our large garden (seen in the slideshow) and helped to coordinate our efforts in previous garden set-ups. I organized several fundraising events, from large house parties to small festivals and city wide non-profit cooperative banquets.

We conducted hundreds of discussions revolving around the state of the world and our capacity to improve it, as well as improve our understanding of the world.

I also conducted a one hour radio show called Root Down Radio Hour on a local low-power station (105.9 fm, the Radiator) which involved in-studio and phone interviews with local luminaries.  I wrote and delivered narratives on subjects ranging from permaculture and ecology to cognitive science and economics. I was also in charge of all aspects of radio production: formatting, bumper music, media content and organizing guests.
