Wilderness Medicine and Survival

Edible chanterelle and coral mushrooms with medicinal turkeytail and polypore.

A reishi mushroom locally harvested that has been going into my morning coffee for the last two years

  • Wilderness First Responder certified through NOLS

  • Amateur forager and herbalist

  • General knowledge of mushroom genera and uses in the north east

  • Use of wild plants for wound treatment (yarrow, usnea, calendula, plantain, yellow dock)

  • Experience with natural shelters and indigenous building methods

Being an 11th generation and native Vermonter has afforded me a deep affinity for complex natural environments. I am deeply inspired by native building methods, especially the wigwams endemic to new england. Having spent countless hours foraging, exploring and getting lost in the woods I am encourageably developing a relationship with edible and medicinal species of all kingdoms.

My graduation challenge project in highschool involved earning a Wilderness First Responder certification in a two week long immersion course through Northern Outdoor Leadership. Much of the content of the instruction revolved around all the various methods of splinting and bandaging with improvised materials, and a significant portion of leadership skills in order to help fellow adventurers maintain homeostasis. Nutrition, hydration, rest and sleep, food safety and other soft skills were emphasized.

Less than a month after completing the course I saved a friend's life who had suffered a mortal injury to their femoral artery at a party.

The rest of the project revolved around orienteering and survival, where I built and lived in a half dozen different naturally sourced and built structures. I didn't go so far as to make my own cordage, but many different techniques were utilized in several different ecologies. Community service was a requirement for the project as well, so I spent several hours a day clearing and building trails at Sleepy Hollow Ski and Bike in Huntington Vermont where I was conducting my survival project.

Herbs used in my personal tobacco blends. It gets interesting when people ask me for a cigarette.
